Toyama Prefecture, Japan

Famed for the World Heritage Gokayama villages and Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, Toyama is home to some of Japan’s most spectacular forests and waterways. Toyama is part of Japan’s snow country, stunning in winter when the thatched-roof houses of Gokayama conjure images of Lapland. The history that can be explored in Toyama is just as amazing as the seafood and local delicacies!Firefly squid normally live deep in the ocean, and release mysterious blue light in the dark. But every so often many of these creatures crowd into the shore of Toyama Bay, and their blue lights can be seen on the shore. The bay is known for the mirages on the horizon during the winter months and for being a spawning ground for the firefly squid. Hong Kong (HKG) to Macao (HZMB Port)MGTO Offers Free Transfer

The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has launched a new free ticket offer for a direct bus service from Hong Kong International Airport to Macau. The offer was launched on the 1st of January and is designed to encourage visitors to HK to expand their visit to the neighboring region.The tourism authority has partnered with a bus service operator to offer a direct shuttle service from the airport that is available to all international and Taiwan visitors. Tickets are limited in quantity and available on a first-come, first-served basis.To avail, travelers are advised to proceed directly to the bus service counter upon arrival in Hong Kong where a free bus ticket will be issued after the presentation of travel documents and boarding passes. The route goes straight from the airport to Macau Port at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB).

Planet vs. Plastics

The theme for Earth Day 2024 is “Planet vs. Plastics,” which highlights EarthDay.org’s commitment to demanding a 60 percent reduction on the production of all plastics by 2040, the organization said. City officials began restricting traffic on streets for Earth Day in 2016. The event has since become an annual tradition where New Yorkers can bike or walk along streets that are normally cluttered with cars. Major areas where cars will be banned on April 20 between 10 am and 4 pm include Broadway in Manhattan from Union Square to Times Square. The agency will also host performances, art installations and other programming along some of the streets closed to traffic.“Car-free day is about celebrating Mother Earth,” Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said at a news conference. “We encourage all New Yorkers on this day and as many days as possible to leave their vehicles at home and opt to more sustainable modes of transportation like transit, biking or walking.”

Vibrant Festivities of Songkranand Nepalese New Year

The Thai new year, Songkran, is now celebrated in Thailand, Laos, and some other parts of Southeast Asia on April 13-15 according to the Western calendar. Songkran is a festival of purification, and its main feature is water-splashing. In fact, Songkran resembles a big, friendly, three-day water fight. Everyone carries a jar or basin of water and splashes everyone else whenever possible; to splash someone is to give that person a blessing. (Tourists quickly learn to keep their cameras in plastic bags.) Happy New Year! In Nepal, the New Year isn’t just a once-a-year affair; it’s a celebration that occurs multiple times throughout the year! Locals get up to nine opportunities to usher in a fresh beginning with the festival of ‘Nava Varsha’ and other joyous occasions filled with parades, parties, family get-togethers, and of course, delicious food and drinks. Taiwan Earthquake 7.4 Magnitude

The powerful earthquake in Taiwan on Wednesday 4/3/2024 shook an island that was well prepared for a seismic catastrophe. Nine people have been reported dead, though Taiwanese officials said the death toll could rise in the coming days. More than 1,000 were injured and at least 100 were feared trapped. The worst damage was in the city of Hualien. Given the size of the quake — magnitude 7.4 — seismology experts said it appeared the dense island had fared as well as could be expected in initial reports.Officials and researchers in Taiwan are still evaluating the earthquake’s characteristics, impacts and casualties. The lessons they learn could provide U.S. scientists and political leaders a measuring stick for how buildings and communities here might fare.Many deadly earthquakes have struck Taiwan in the past century. The island sits on several active faults, which are associated with seismic activity. It is near the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area the U.S. Geological Survey says is the most seismically and volcanically active zone in the world.

NJ-NYC Area Earthquake 4.8 Magnitude

Little damage is reported but aftershocks were felt in NJ and NYC. Earthquakes in the Greater New York area is rare, but smaller and occasionally more powerful earthquakes have previously rattled this region spanning New York, Philadelphia and Wilmington. Smaller earthquakes hit around every two to three years, and larger ones strike roughly twice a century, according to USGS. What caused the East Coast 4.8 magnitude temblor in NJ on April 5, 2024? It’s not clear what fault line Friday’s earthquake originated on. There is a major fault line in New Jersey called the Ramapo Fault, which stems from the Appalachian Mountains, CBS New York reported. There are also at least five smaller fault lines under the island of Manhattan.

Solar Eclipse on Monday 4/8/2024

Among the cities smack dab in the action: Dallas; Little Rock, Arkansas; Indianapolis, Cleveland, Ohio; Rochester, Buffalo, New York; and Montreal — making for the continent’s biggest eclipse crowd. But, practically everyone on the continent can catch at least a partial eclipse. In the US, totality will begin in Texas at 1:27 pm CDT and will end in Maine at 3:35 pm EDT on April 8, 2024.In 2024 the path crosses more major population centers than the 2017 eclipse, enabling 31.6 million people to see the eclipse without leaving their city, versus just 12 million in August 21, 2017. In addition, one of the most entrancing parts of a total solar eclipse is the view of the sun’s corona during totality.Part of what makes a total solar eclipse so special is that it’s rare, a once-in-a-lifetime event for many. When such events happen over large swaths of the country – as was the case in 2017 and will be on Monday – it’s a bonding experience for millions of Americans.Diving into the memory of the 2017 solar eclipse, hosted by Denise Hunter on a private yacht, we immersed ourselves in the captivating beauty of the cosmos and experienced the awe and magic of these once-in-a-lifetime occurrences.

Macau Educational Experience

Macau doesn’t want to be known as just the world’s biggest gambling hub. The Chinese city is the only place in the Asian country where casino gambling is legal. We were embraced with a heartfelt greeting in Dana’s indigenous tongue, serenaded by local suppliers from Auckland and Queenstown in their native language, and indulged in personalized 5-minute meetings with each. The event was topped off with a delightful lunch at Fig and Olive. It was a harmonious blend of culture and business!

Scottish Heritage

Scotland, a country rich in history and culture, is home to the famous whisky-making tradition that dates back centuries. The origins of whisky-making in Scotland can be traced back to the spread of winemaking methods from European monasteries. With no access to grapes, monks used grain mash instead to produce an early form of the popular spirit. Scotland is where the water of life flows freely in the form of whiskey.Additionally, Scotland is renowned for its iconic musical instrument, the bagpipes, which have become a symbol of Scottish heritage. Unlike its Irish counterpart, the Uileann Pipes, the bagpipes are uniquely Scottish.  Tartan Day was founded in Nova Scotia as an annual celebration of Scottish culture and heritage, and has grown more popular every year. In the US, it was declared ‘Tartan Day’ by the Senate in 1998 to celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions made by Scottish Americans to the United States.

Songkran marks the start of the traditional Thai New Year.Thailand’s Tourism Authority has put together a list of celebrations taking place all over the country, but for those who would like to engage in the cultural side, Bangkok is shaping out to be a top destination for Songkran travelers this year.The inaugural Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024 will take place from April 11-15 in the city’s historic old center, around Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue and Sanam Luang, near popular sites such as the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha.It’s the splashing that has turned Songkran into a global sensation in recent decades, with massive water fights held on closed city streets everywhere from Khao San Road and Silom Road in Bangkok to Chiang Mai’s historic Old City. Pouring water is a significant act during Songkran, symbolizing cleansing, reverence and good fortune.

Longevity Blue Zone in Okinawa

It’s Japan, but not as you’ve done it before. Made of up 150 islands, Japan’s Okinawa prefecture is an unexpected tropical paradise where Japanese and American cultures combine, the scenery is inimitable, and wildlife abounds. “Blue Zones” are geographic areas with lower rates of chronic diseases and a longer life expectancy. Diet, fasting, and exercise are factors associated with Blue Zones. Italy, Greece, Japan, Costa Rica, and the US have a Blue Zone. Okinawa is one of the world’s Blue Zones, areas renowned for exceptionally long healthy lives compared to the rest of the world’s population. The lifespans enjoyed by Okinawans may be explained by several genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Blue Zones centenarians typically drink coffee at breakfast, tea in the afternoon, wine at 5pm, and water all day. To live to be 100, keep your beverages simple and avoid sugary beverages like soda and fruit juices. Other contributors include: Plant Based, Highly Varied Diet: The Okinawans eat way more vegetables than most people (mostly green and yellow ones), as well as whole grains, tofu, fish and other legumes. They eat very little sugar, and very little meat, dairy or eggs. People who live in Okinawa, Japan have a wise strategy when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight. They call it “hara hachi bu”, which means to stop eating when you are 80% full. Studies show that cutting back on calories can lead to better heart health, longevity, and weight loss. Danxia Landform in Hunan

Huge rocks of dark red color with grotesque shapes give tourists a marvelous sight. It is located in Xinning County, about 500 km away from Changsha, capital of Hunan province. In the south, Langshan Mountain is connected with Guilin, and in the north it echoes Zhangjiajie. There are more than 500 scenic spots in Langshan Mountain.

Seychelles, Smallest Country in Africa

Seychelles’ grand diversity extends to its people who hail from the four corners of the world: European explorers; African slaves; British and French colonialists; Indian and Chinese traders; adventurers, pirates, and seekers of fortune – each weaving the threads of their own distinct culture into the shining tapestry that is now the Seychelles nation.Seychelles is made up of two main groups of over 100 islands in the western Indian Ocean. Its closest neighbors are Kenya, a distance of 1,310 miles, flight time 3 hours and 15 minutes, and Madagascar, which lies about 1100 kilometres south.The distance from Seychelles to Dubai is 2,110 miles, and takes approximately 8 hours and 56 minutes to get from Dubai to Seychelles, including transfers. Contributing to the high cost of living in Seychelles – 115 islands in the western Indian Ocean – is the fact that 80 percent of what is consumed is imported. The islands are famous for their crystal-clear waters, powdery white sandy beaches, pristine green environment, and diverse but yet unique biodiversity. Seychelles’ nightlife is centered around Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, whatever little there is of it.Seychelles’ modern population is comprised of the descendants of French and later British settlers, Africans, and Indian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern traders and is concentrated on three of its 155 islands – the vast majority on Mahe and lesser numbers on Praslin and La Digue.

Baltimore Bridge Collapse

The collapse of the city’s Francis Scott Key Bridge has temporarily disrupted access to the Patapsco River and the Port of Baltimore. As a result, Carnival Legend’s upcoming itinerary has been adjusted, with the ship now returning to Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will receive complimentary bus service to Baltimore. Additionally, the next seven-day cruise on March 31 will depart from and return to Norfolk. Guests on affected cruises are being promptly notified of these changes. Royal Caribbean is closely monitoring the situation regarding the arrival of Vision of the Seas in Baltimore on April 4.

Women In Travel

The Secretary of the Department of Tourism Philippines, H.E. Christina Garcia Frasco, delivered a keynote address, sharing her experiences as a woman in an executive role in the tourism industry and discussing initiatives started by DoT to safeguard women’s rights and livelihoods, such as the TourISM WoRCS programme.Women in leadership roles from various tourism sectors shared their methods to improve their organisations, from adopting innovative ideas to encouraging the younger generation to sharpen their skills. Last but not least, sustainable projects that make industry-wide impact led by industry experts across Asia Pacific were also discussed.

Malaysia Leads Southeast Asia

Malaysia leads Southeast Asia in the number of skyscrapers and holds the 4th position globally, boasting a total of 366 buildings in March 2024! According to Skyscraper Center website, there are 70 countries worldwide with skyscrapers, categorized by heights of 150m+, 200m+, 300m+. Southeast Asia contributes 7 countries to this global list. PATA New York recently collaborated with Jiangsu Culture and Tourism Promotion, USA to celebrate the Lunar New Year at the House of Joy in NYC. This year marks the auspicious Year of the Dragon, which is believed to bring good luck and fortune. Guests experienced an enjoyable evening filled with delightful cultural performances in dance and music, premium tea tasting, a sumptuous banquet, a video presentation of Jiangsu Province, arts and crafts, and took home a special gift!

At PATA, we are dedicated to promoting cultural exchange and tourism, and what better way to do it than by celebrating the Lunar New Year with our friends from Jiangsu Culture and Tourism Promotion, USA! AI Manages 28,000-Mile High-Speed Rail

China has now fully transitioned to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the operation and maintenance of its rail network. This 45,000-kilometer (28,000-mile) high-speed rail network is the world’s largest, and is controlled by an AI system in Beijing. By harnessing AI-powered predictive analytics, railway operators can leverage real-time data for informed actions, revolutionizing maintenance practices. For instance, advanced algorithms analyze vast amounts of sensor data from trains, tracks, and other infrastructure to predict maintenance needs accurately. It is also capable of alerting the teams in charge of maintenance of abnormal situations within 40 minutes.

MSC Bellissima in Shanghai

The largest and newest flagship cruise vessel in Asia, the MSC Bellissima, arrived in Shanghai today, March 15, with its maiden voyage beginning tomorrow, and marking the first return of an international cruise ship to the Chinese mainland.

Southeast AsiaBeautiful Temples and Traditional DressTake a journey through time and explore the fascinating history of the Khmer Empire. At its peak, the Khmer Empire was larger than the Byzantine Empire, which existed around the same time. The beginning of the Khmer Empire is conventionally dated to 802, when Khmer prince Jayavarman II declared himself chakravartin ( lit. ‘universal ruler’, a title equivalent to ’emperor’) in the Phnom Kulen mountains. The Khmer kings were absolute rulers, meaning that they possessed total power and authority over their people.  This ancient civilization, also known as Ancient Cambodia, was heavily influenced by Indian culture primarily due to the spread of Hinduism and Buddhism from India to Southeast Asia. It enjoyed its greatest prosperity from the 11th to the 13th century. The Khmer Empire ruled over a vast territory that included present-day Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Unfortunately, the empire’s downfall came in 1431 CE when it was captured by the Thai kingdom of Ayutthaya. Southeast Asia is a melting pot of various cultures, and each country has its unique identity. Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar have an Indian base culture. While Vietnam’s culture is influenced by China, the southern region of Vietnam has more influence from Cambodia and other countries that were influenced by India. The legacy of the Khmer Empire lives on, and you can explore it today. Khmer, also known as Cambodian, is the language of the Khmer people and the official language of the Kingdom of Cambodia. From the delectable cuisine to the colorful festivals and traditions, Southeast Asia is a treasure trove of vibrant cultures waiting to be explored.

Shaanxi Culture and Tourism

At an event promoting culture and tourism for China’s Shaanxi Province on Tuesday, Du Jin’gen, deputy director of the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, extended a warm invitation to U.S. tourists and leaders in the tourism industry to explore the wonders of Shaanxi.

Terry Dale, president & CEO of the United States Tour Operators Association, said “Today, we celebrate the Year of Dragon. The dragon creates a bond that transcends culture and borders and represents strength and mission, goodwill, and all the things that we represent in the tourism industry. This particular year is special for us to celebrate.”Terry said tourism helps build bridges and promote people-to-people exchanges, bearing the responsibility of bringing people together. “It helps foster compassion and recognition that we are the same. We’re all humans.”

US-China Tourism Leadership Summit “If China returned to 2019 U.S. tourism levels, it would add $30 billion to the U.S. economy and 50,000 U.S. jobs,” U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in August, 2023. She wants to boost travel and tourism between the two countries.  The 14th US-China Tourism Leadership Summit is scheduled to be held in Xian, Shaanxi province in May 2024. This summit creates a platform to convene leaders from both countries to build and strengthen relationships between the U.S. and Chinese governments and travel industries. The program is designed to foster reciprocal understanding by educating U.S. and Chinese delegates about the current challenges, emerging trends, and avenues for growth within the travel and tourism industry.

The Silk Road – Xian to Rome

In 1990, only five percent of Americans had a passport. Today, that number is 48%. More Americans can travel abroad now than at any time in our history. There are now over 160 million valid U.S. passports in circulation (nearly double the amount from 2007). New Jersey boasts the highest percentage of passport holders (68%); Delaware (67%), Alaska (65%), Massachusetts (63%), New York (62%), and California (60%) are close behind. The world’s most powerful passports—Japan, Spain, Singapore, France, Germany, and Italy. All six countries’ passport holders can travel to a whopping 194 destinations, visa-free.

US-China Transpacific Air Travel

Starting on March 31, Chinese passenger airlines will be allowed 50 weekly round-trip U.S. flights returning the market to about one-third of pre-pandemic levels. It is a significant step forward in further normalization of the US-China flight market in anticipation of the summer 2024 season. China has simplified visa applications for tourists from the United States, cutting the number of documents required, and has offered a discount on new visa applications. More than 150 weekly round-trip passenger flights were allowed by each side before restrictions were imposed in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but until August 2023, Chinese and U.S. carriers could each fly only 12 a week between the two countries. The number rose on September 1st to 18 weekly round-trips and then to 24 per week starting October 29. The USDOT approved 35 for Chinese carriers in November.

Built by over 12,500 volunteers from across the United States, BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham is the largest Hindu temple in the U.S. A mandir is a Hindu house of worship, however, this mandir complex is open to visitors from all ages and backgrounds interested in enjoying the intricate architecture, gardens, inspirational messages, vast plaza, or even enjoy the other facilities within the complex, such as Shayona Cafe and Akshardham store. This can be an easy and memorable stop for your groups on their way to DC, NYC, or Philadelphia.No photos allowed in the temple.

Zhangjiajie Culture and Tourism

The Zhangjiajie delegation visiting New York to promote the vibrant culture and tourism of Zhangjiajie were warmly greeted at the Marriott Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. The February 24th event, hosted by the esteemed Mayor of Zhangjiajie, Mr. Wang Hongbin, was a true celebration of cultural exchange.

Ambassador Huang Ping’s captivating speech highlighted the unique experiences awaiting visitors in this enchanting destination, such as: Bailong Elevator, the highest, fastest, fully exposed outdoor double-decker sightseeing elevator with the largest capacity, in the world. Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is the world’s longest (1,410 feet) and highest glass-bottomed pedestrian bridge (980 feet) Tienmen Mountain Glass Skywalk located 4,700 feet above sea level on the side of Tianmen Mountain, the 2.5-inch crystal-clear glass pathway is an excellent attraction for brave tourists to enjoy breathtaking views of the unique and colorful, natural landscape of Tianmen Mountain Park and Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain Cableway is an incredible 24,458 feet long cableway that climbs to an elevation of 4,982 feet from the base in Zhangjiajie city. The ride on the cable car takes about 35 minutes to reach the top of Tianmen Mountain.

We were honored to hear guest speaker, Mayor Derek Armstead of Linden City in New Jersey, share valuable insights on the significance of Chinese language and culture in today’s global landscape. As one of the fastest growing nations, China’s influence is undeniable, leading to the flourishing of programs worldwide dedicated to teaching its language and culture. Linden, NJ public schools take pride in offering one of the most sought-after languages in modern society, Chinese. The public schools in the city of Linden promote culture and the Chinese language. Beginning in elementary schools (School #1, School #6, and School #10), Linden’s youngest students are offered the basics of the Chinese language. Linden public schools provides a wide variety of Chinese courses designed to promote fluency in both spoken and written Mandarin Chinese. In addition to language, students are exposed to culture representative of all nations where Chinese is a national language.

China-US Tourism Leadership Summit

The recent meeting between U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Chinese Minister of Culture and Tourism Hu Heping has resulted in an agreement to strengthen the cultural ties and increase mutual visits between the two nations. As a part of this initiative, the 14th China-U.S. Tourism Leadership Summit will be held in May 2024 in the city of Xian, Shaanxi province, after a gap of five years. This summit will further revive and develop tourism cooperation between the two countries.The Shaanxi delegation from Xian will be hosting the culture and tourism event in New York, at the Westin Hotel Times Square on February 27th, as a precursor to the Tourism Leadership Summit.
